IFCAE was founded in Seattle in 1998 then moved to Portland, OR in 1999 where it remained till the end of 2012. The mission focus was to conduct collaborative, interdisciplinary research-based initiatives that foster vibrant and resilient livelihoods, communities, and ecosystems. Many projects were done throughout the Pacific Northwest, U.S. and in many other countries.
From 2012 to 2018 IFCAE researchers moved to university-based settings and the organization focused exclusively on environmental education through a merger with the World Steward and Little Little White Salmon Biodiversity Reserve in the Columbia River Gorge just east of Portland.
At the end of 2018 the Institute for Culture and Ecology was official retired.

Link to Institute for Culture and Ecology/Kenya. In Kenya is another organization named the Institute for Culture and Ecology. Though we were never affiliated we were excited to learn another organization had emerged with the same name and mission to do applied work at the intersection of culture and ecology.
