IFCAE Project:

Mali Community Forestry Exchange

Timeframe:  2000
Organizers:    Jefferson Center, U.C. Berkeley, GDRN-5, SOS-Sahel, and Near East Foundation
Administration: Jefferson Center
IFCAE Role: Logistical support and interpreter services

Project Overview
In September 2000, the Jefferson Center, working with Dr. Louise Fortmann at the University of California/Berkeley and representatives of three Malian NGOs (GDRN-5, SOS-Sahel, Near East Foundation), sponsored a three-week visit to the Pacific Northwest by three Malian foresters.

In addition to providing the Malians with an understanding of the major issues in community forestry in the western United States, the exchange also allowed Americans to learn about community forestry in francophone West Africa. Although West Africa has been the site of some interesting experiments in decentralized forest management during the past decade, few English speakers are aware of these efforts since very little information has been published on them in the English language. IFCAE representative Rebecca McLain contributed extensively to the project in the form of logistical advice, interpreter services, and provision of board and lodging for the Malian guests during their first week in the Pacific Northwest.

Highlights of the visit included the following meetings and field visits:
  • Meeting with EcoTrust and U.S. Forest Service staff in Portland
  • Visit to Simpson Timber Company's holdings in Shelton, WA to learn about NTFP issues
  • Visit to the Mushroom Patch, a small mushroom company based in Lyons, Oregon
  • Logging show and tree farm tour with the Grant family in Oregon's coastal range
  • Visit to the matsutake mushroom camp in Crescent, Oregon
  • Participation in Campesino Day in Medford, Oregon
  • Participation in Lead Partnership Group meeting in the Sierra Nevadas, CA
  • Participation in community forestry class at U.C.-Berkeley
