IFCAE Project:

Nontimber Forest Products Curriculum Development

Timeframe:  June 2004 - July 2006
Project Team: Kathryn A. Lynch (P.I.), Eric T. Jones, Rebecca McLain

Administration:

Institute for Culture and Ecology (IFCAE)
Funding: National Commission on Science for Sustainable Forestry (NCSSF)
(Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, National Forest Foundation, Surdna Foundation,
The David and Lucille Packard Foundation)
Background:

In 2002-03 IFCAE conducted a national study examining the relationship between nontimber forest products and biodiversity conservation (report).  In this study we found that NTFPs, such as wild foods, medicinal plants and floral greens, are often overlooked in natural resource management and policy, despite their widespread presence and use.  However, increasing attention to ecosystem management, the conservation of biological diversity, sustainable forestry and economic diversification in rural communities has meant a growing interest in NTFPs.  Universities and extension programs are now seeking to include information about NTFPs in their curricula.  To address this need, IFCAE has developed a NTFP Curriculum Workbook, which contains over 100 lesson plans, handouts, and homework assignments.  For more details visit the online table of contents and project final report. The project involved many advisors and reviewers from universities and elsewhere for which we are very grateful (acknowledgements).
